WHO WORE IT BEST?

The 63rd Prime Time Emmy Awards (2011) marked yet another milestone for fashion especially on the RED CARPET! I know there was a lot of talk this year about the trendy "reds" that were worn by some of our favorites (Kate Winslet, Sofia Vergara, Lea Michele, etc), but I'll have to divert from the majority opinion this year and go with my own.  Don't get me wrong; Kate Winslet, Sofia Vergara, and Lea Michele all looked gorgeous in their red gowns, however, there were others who rocked theirs better and as a result their trends will be longer lasting. The Eikonic favorites for this year's most fashionable for the Emmy's goes to: FIRST-Heidi Klum, SECOND-Julianne Hough, and THIRD-Aubrey Plaza! It's after labor day, and "white" still reigns! I also see a trend of mixing whites with other close soft colors such as beige or other soft metalics along with a mix of material such as Julianne Hough's shown below.

The look that did NOT make the cut with me tonight is Gweneth Paltrow's black lace ensemble. I usually love the way she dresses but this year's Emmy's was not it! It was as if Bollywood met Ms. Jeenie and had a wardrobe malfunction; not too impressed. Til next time!

EIKONIC PICKS FOR "THIS WEEK IN FASHION"

This has been quite an interesting and eventful week in the world of fashion; significant for its creativity with NYFW (New York Fashion Week), chaos due to the reintroduction of Target's Missoni brand, and thinking outside the box by allowing America to embrace plus size models with the new hit show, "Big Sexy" on TLC. Starting with most popular, the following are Eikonic picks for 'This Week In Fashion:"
1. Missoni Mayhem: September 13th was a day for the books, not only for giant retailer,Target but a memorable one for all fashionistas all over the nation. This was a day that united us all; whether competing to be the first to add everything you've waited to own for so long in your virtual cart before the infamous cyber crash, or shoving the next shopper to the ground mercilessly to get your hand on that one last zigzag shirt, dress, hair clip, rain boots for the upcoming season, or a storage bin---all in the name of MISSONI! Every item sold for under $40, compared to $595 for a simple tank top sold at Bergdorf Goodman for example.  Unfortunately, I was one of the unlucky ones left cursing at my computer screen as the website on which I was shopping froze and shut down.  A sale that was supposed to last until October 22nd was wiped out within hours of introduction to the store---hopefully I can at least still get my hand on a $2.99 Missoni hair clip (sigh). Until then I will continue my list of "most wanted" Missoni products:

2. NYFW (New York Fashion Week): This week was yet another creative one for artistic designers like Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Milly, and Max Azria (to name a few) to debut their spring/summer collection for the upcoming year. Bright colors, futuristic looks with metallics, florals, and textured materials are some of the trends that made their way to the runway and will be common by next spring/summer.

3. Plus Sized Models Are Here To Stay: This does not mean however, that "you can have a pretty face and be as big as you want" says Audre from "Big Sexy," a new show about five sexy plus-size women trying to make it in the New York City Fashion Industry. They too have rules and guidelines they must follow regarding their weight and looks, while allowing America to invade their personal lives (like any other reality star on air today). These women deserve some recognition for being brave enough to look the fashion industry in the eye and let them know that they are just as good to be in the industry so bring it on!!! Tune in to 'Big Sexy' on TLC on Tuesdays.

She Started Off As An Underdog...Only to Take the CROWN

Miss Angola!!! Starting off as an underdog by the fans, I had a gut feeling that Miss Angola was going to celebrate gloriously on this 60th Anniversary of the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant. It wasn't only her beauty that captured my attention, but her poise, grace, hidden sass, and best of all her fashion picks for the night. She started as an underdog during the swimsuit competition according to t.v. fans/voters, however I didn't think so. Her choice of yellow allowed her dark skin to look even more vibrant in addition to her physique, poise, and confident strut. What started off as an underdog experience by voters landed her third by the actual judges. Next was the evening gown competition: Miss Angola's was to die for, hands down! Other contestants (Brazil and Costa Rica) came close, but Miss Angola's sweetheart neck, nude and silver mixed sequined gown stole my heart. The slit in the front added extra elegance, but best of all her strut topped it off. That landed her the number 1 spot, yet the night was still not over. The last competition we all braced ourselves for was the answer(s) to the judges' questions. Miss Philippines did the best in this category, but Miss Angola was right behind her in my opinion.
From beginning to end, Miss Angola was the best overall! What started off as an underdog experience landed her the crown as Miss Universe 2011. Congrats to Miss Angola and long lives Africa!
An insight to trends from the pageant that will become mainstream: nude heels, white gowns (formal events), and bright colors. White dresses were in for the summer, but it seems like they will continue throughout the year (especially for winter formal events). No more "white after labor day" myths for 2011after all. Wear whatever you want and own it! Who knows what 2012 will bring? Til next time!
